Rainhill Victoria Quiz Team – Biography Joined the Widnes Quiz League in 1984, winning the second division at the first attempt. Founder member Geoffrey Walker also played for Black Horse, Cronton, in the Liverpool Quiz League. Michele Richardson joined in 1987, and, they married in 2000. In 1987, The Victoria was refurbished, requiring a move to the Commercial Hotel, where Mark Kerr playing in the Boddingtons League, joined. The team were perennial bridesmaids, winning the Widnes League 1st Division just once, in 1989/90. Returned to the Victoria in 1990 and joined the Liverpool League 1992 alongside Bowling Green. The new entrants occupied the top two spots in the 4th, 3rd and 2nd Divisions in successive seasons, Victoria winning Division 3 in 1993/4. MQL veteran Bill Thomas joined from Empress for the team’s 1st Division debut, and the team consolidated in mid-table. Riley Cup success came in 1996/7 and the team were semi-finalists in 1998/9. Les Garner of the defunct Prescot Imperial team joined in 1998. Peter Rushbrooke came along in 2002, initially as question master, but now also playing. In 2003, upon the demise of the Orwellians, the team was greatly bolstered by the addition of Philip Gray, a thirty-year colleague of Arthur Evans at CADWA and by Graham Barker. The reinvigorated team enjoyed its highest league position in 2004, finishing second to Wheatsheaf but then in 2005 finished as league winners. |
