Rainhill Victoria Quiz Team – Biography
Joined the
Widnes Quiz League in 1984, winning the second division at the first
attempt. Founder member Geoffrey Walker also played for Black Horse,
Cronton, in the Liverpool Quiz League. Michele Richardson joined in 1987,
and, they married in 2000.
In 1987, The
Victoria was refurbished, requiring a move to
the Commercial Hotel, where Mark Kerr playing in the Boddingtons League,
joined. The team were perennial bridesmaids, winning the Widnes League
1st Division just once, in 1989/90.
Returned to
the Victoria in 1990 and joined the Liverpool
League 1992 alongside Bowling Green. The new entrants occupied the top
two spots in the 4th, 3rd and 2nd Divisions in successive seasons,
Victoria winning Division 3 in 1993/4.
MQL veteran
Bill Thomas joined from Empress for the team’s 1st Division
debut, and the team consolidated in mid-table. Riley Cup success came in
1996/7 and the team were semi-finalists in 1998/9.
Les Garner
of the defunct Prescot Imperial team joined in 1998. Peter Rushbrooke
came along in 2002, initially as question master, but now also playing.
In 2003,
upon the demise of the Orwellians, the team was greatly bolstered by the
addition of Philip Gray, a thirty-year colleague of Arthur Evans at CADWA
and by Graham Barker. The reinvigorated team enjoyed its highest league
position in 2004, finishing second to Wheatsheaf but then in 2005
finished as league winners, an achievement
repeated in 2006, 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
